On 31st March 2008, Rotary club of Kota Melaka welcomed and hosted GSE team from District 6670, Dayton, Ohio. Members of RAC Kota Melaka and guest Sree attended the meeting and had the pleasure of meeting the GSE team. Among the members of Rac Kota Melaka, two had participated in GSE 2007 to District 1550, Netherlands.

This year's GSE team comprises of four beautiful ladies (Kelly Gray, Geraldine Pegues, Lisa Puskarcik, Jennifer Teasdale) and led by IPP Dr Hans J. Berkel.

After the presentation by GSE team, we adjourned to Pak Putra Restaurant, where the team was introduced to some local delicacies. For example, naan, briyani rice, tandoori chicken.

WIND OF CHANGE

The recent 12th General Election saw the great impact of the wind of change!
We are not going to talk about that because we come from a non political
organization and our core business is to serve humanity irrespective of race,
color and creed in our community.
The wind of change that I am talking about is the wind of ROTARY that can
MAKE DREAMS REAL! Let the ROTARY wind changed our attitudes
especially in fulfilling our obligations as Rotarians to our club.
The first obligation is off course to attend our weekly meetings regularly as
required by the Attendance Rules. Our club does not believe in punitive
action but rather self-motivation to overcome the problem of non
attendance. Only you yourself can decide whether you want to change?
The other change that you need to look into is your level of commitment and
involvement in our club. Have you been actively participating in all our club
activities? If you have not, it is time for you to change. Perhaps by starting
to plan and manage your time smartly to participate in future club activities.
We often hear Rotarians saying we do not have the time! All of us have 24
hours a day and how much you want to give to Rotary is entirely up to you. It
is only when we are not truthful to ourselves that we forget Rotary to
become lazy and to come up with all sort of excuses! Well, it is said excuses
are just like assholes everybody got one!
The Wind of Change has come and the wind of ROTARY is following closely
behind. Are you prepared to change to MAKE DREAMS REAL for our
community? Let the wind of change rejuvenate you to PARTICIPATE!

Welcoming the year of the Rat

RACKM's annual CNY gathering has taken a different twist this year of the Rat. Instead of the usual chinese dinner set with karaoke, we decided to be more adventurous. Hence the trip to Machap (Rtr Danielle's hometown, which is about half an hour drive from Melaka), for some 'exotic' food.

East Meets West In Melaka

Rotaractor Allen Tang of Rotaract Club of Singapore City, an ambassadorial scholar 2007-2008 from Texas, disembarked in Melaka with four guest from Japan on 4th January. During these three days, Rtr Allen and guests were introduced to the historical city of Melaka and the ever scrumptious Malaysian food. In exchange, we learn about the culture of Texas from Rtr Allen and Japanese culture from the guests namely: Tomoyo, Sato, Gata, and Miyuki. From tasting pungent durian cendol to ABC, from walking the streets of Jonker to St Paul, they experience all that Melaka has to offer.

After a merriment Saturday, fifty Rotaractors from He Lingnan University & Baptist University in Hong Kong arrive on the soil of Melaka on Sunday, 6th January. These passionate fifty rotaractors from Hong Kong flew to KL to participate in a community service and to learn the culture of Malaysia in Melaka. The rotaractors scaled the St Paul Hill and visited the ruins of Portugese remnants.

Greetings from Taiwan!! It is more like a post-greeting actually.

APRRC has built great friendships for Phei Phei and I with rotaractors from many countries. It is our honour to have been invited to attend the 1^st anniversary of Rotaract Club of Chien-Tan Taipei, on 22^nd Dec 2007. We took this opportunity to attend the event and also to conquer Taiwan in 10 days (13^th Dec- 22^nd Dec). However, due to evil shopping temptations, we failed to do so. We only manage to visit Taipei, Jioufen and Hualien.

Due to the hospitality of the rotaractors (Rtr Tony, Rtr Kunbu, Rtr Roger, Rtr Harrison, etc), the experience was fantastic: great activities, fabulous hosting, together with good cold weather, delicious food and attractive shopping deals. This experience has become the most memorable for Phei Phei and I.

Having to attend the club’s function really is an eye opener. The rotaractors of Rotaract club of Chien-Tan is filled with energy and passion. Phei Phei and I would love to stay in Taipei. Since we are Malaysian, we had to leave. But, we will be back!

History of District 3310

District 3310 history goes back to 1929. It was between 1929 and 1930 that seven Rotary Clubs were organised in the then Malaya Peninsula and Siam region . The clubs included Penang (12/8/29), Seremban (20/9/29), Kuala Lumpur (27/9/29), Ipoh (11/10/29), Klang-Port Swettenham (7/5/30), Singapore (6/6/30) and Malacca (8/7/30). When these clubs were formed, the Malay Peninsula and Siam were not designated into districts. The Rotary Club of Malacca was chartered on 8 September 1930 and the Rotary Club of Singapore followed on 6 December 1930.

However on 1 July 1931, the Malay Peninsula and Siam were designated as Provisional District "B" and on 1 July 1935, French Indo-China was included in Provisional District "B" which together became a regular district of Rotary International (District 80). Prince Purachatra became the first District Governor of District 80. On 13 April 1936, Sarawak, Brunei and British North Borneo were also included in District 80. In January 1944 during the war years, membership of all Rotary Clubs in District 80 was terminated and District 80 was voided.

On 18 December 1946 after the war, all Rotary Clubs previously in District 80 were re-admitted and the District re-established.

During 1948-49, all Districts in RI were re-numbered and District 80 became District 46. All Districts were again re-numbered on 1 July 1957 and District 46 became District 330. In the early 80's District 330 was split and clubs in Thailand formed there own District leaving clubs in Malaysia Singapore and Brunei as District 330. On 1 July 1991, with the number of clubs totaling over 80 District 330 was divided into District 3300 consisting of clubs in West Malaysia, except Johor and Malacca, which were grouped into District 3310 together with East Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

In 1968 the United States was bubbling over with the energy of change. Apollo 8 rocketed toward the moon, protesters screamed for an end to the Vietnam War, and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. sparked riots in cities across the nation.

In this revolutionary climate, several entrepreneurial college students sought to establish a new club at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, N.C., USA. Their drive sparked the creation of the club that became Rotaract.

Today, Rotaract, Rotary International's service club program for young adults ages 18-30, has grown to more than 186,000 members in about 8,100 clubs in nearly 140 countries.

Although Rotaractors everywhere have continued traditions started by the UNCC club's 21 founding members, little is known about the founders. So we tracked down several of them to ask about their lives today and their memories of the club.

Rotarians have known for a long time that Rotaract builds leaders, and the pioneer members we spoke to thrived because of their entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and drive — hallmark traits of Rotaractors past and present.

Bill Baumgardner

Then: Club president, 1967-68

Now: Successful entrepreneur and race-car owner

Bill Baumgardner was a freshman at UNCC when he and his buddy Dick Helms brought their proposal for a college-level Rotary program to the Rotary Club of Charlotte-North.

"At that time, we wanted to help in the growth of the college and continue the tradition of Rotary," says Baumgardner, who had been part of an Interact club in high school. "So we thought maybe we could get a Rotary club to sponsor a college version of Interact at UNCC."

The time was right for new ideas. When Baumgardner enrolled at UNCC the campus was just getting established. Dorms were under construction, and barely 1,800 students commuted to the campus each day.

The idea of extending Rotary to college-aged youths struck a chord with Charlie Grier, a member of the Rotary Club of Charlotte-North.

"We met at Grier's house one night with several Rotarians and they said we had an interesting concept," recalls Baumgardner. Grier contacted the university president as well as the dean of students to get permission to promote a club similar to Interact, sponsored by Charlotte-North Rotarians.

"It just snowballed from there," says Baumgardner. "We got it through the board at UNCC, and I was president when Rotary gave us our official charter." Baumgardner still keeps a plaque from Rotary, thanking him for serving as president of the club, in his office.

"I have a glass cabinet and a wall with mementos from various parts of the world," he says. "That Rotary plaque is right there with everything that's meant something to me."

After his days in Rotaract, Baumgardner went on to own a small accounting firm. He later created StaffAmerica, an offsite human resources company that takes care of staffing and accounting needs for companies. "In the beginning, it was just me and a part-time secretary," says Baumgardner. "But it grew from a start-up to almost a billion-dollar company."

Baumgardner sold StaffAmerica in 2003 and says he's been retired ever since, though he is considering starting another company.

Baumgardner's other business venture, the BACE Motorsports race team, is still going full speed ahead. The team competes in the NASCAR Busch Grand National series, and has won three national championships.

"We have more exciting plans for BACE Motorsports," says Baumgardner. "But I can't reveal those yet."

Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference (APRRC) 07

Three words: Fun, fun, and fun!

It was the time again that every rotaractors were waiting for: 4^th Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference. This time it was organized by District 3300 and were held from the 24th - 28^th of August in our backyard, A’ Famosa Melaka. Four rotaractors and two guests, from RAC Kota Melaka, attended with full excitement and brought back lots of experience, memories and new souls in their heart.

APRRC was established to bring Rotaractors from around the Asia Pacific region to one venue with the objective of establishing a common ground for discussions as well as affording a platform for the sharing of views and ideas.

The response was so great, where over 500 delegates attended. There were delegates from Taiwan, Japan, Hungary, India, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and a few more countries. Hence it provided good opportunities to exchange culture, project experience, idea and bannerettes.

District 3300 did a good job. Thumbs up! Many activities and exciting dinner themes were lined up. There were the serious plenary and conference sessions to the fun and exciting cultural day, cowboy night and beach party. The highlight of the whole event would be cultural day where cultural bazaar and cultural night filled the day. Delegates from each country brought food, souvenirs and items from their country to share during the day. When the moon conquered the sky, delegates performed and dressed up in their cultural costumes. What an eye opening to see fellow delegates putting in their maximum strength and energy into their performance.

These five days and four nights ended in a split second. The conference ended with the announcement of the next Interota 2008 in Seoul and the 5^th APRRC to be held in Indonesia by District 3400. So rotaractors, what are you waiting for???

My Rotaract journey has not come to an end.

I accepted Max’s invite to participate in a community service project on the 15th Sept 2007 organised by Epworth Methodist Church, Rotaract Club of Hong Kong Island East and Rotaract Club of Kowloon North West at Chai Wan area where we distributed mooncakes and conversed with the underprivileged in conjunction with the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival on the 26th of Sept 2007. Chai Wan region is situated at Hong Kong Island East and the less fortunate which comprised mainly of elderly people, stayed in flats provided by the government.

Though language was an obvious barrier for me, i noticed the joyful faces of those we met and one granduncle was actually born in Seremban during the pre-Merdeka days. We shared stories and through Max (my translator), i explained latest going-ons of Malaysia as he was very interested to know more!

I had a great time and met many energetic and dynamic Rotaractors. We ended the evening with dinner at Lan Kwai Fong together with a few Taiwanese Rotaractors who were in Hong Kong for a holiday.

Sister Club Signing and Joint Club Meeting

On the 28th August 2007, RAC Kota Melaka had a very meaningful evening. In conjunction with APRRC, Malaysia, RAC Kota Melaka hosted a joint meeting from 4 different clubs and 4 different districts at Friends Café. Prior to that meeting, RAC Kota Melaka together will all the visiting Rotaractors had fellowship at Alai Ikan Bakar.

During the meeting, each of the representative did a presentation about their club, country and personal experience in Rotaract and Rotary.

RAC Kota Melaka (D3310 Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei) renewed the twin club agreement with RAC Semarang Simpang Lima (D3400, Indonesia). The ceremony was witnessed by Rtn PP Paolo from RC Metro Marikina (District 3800, Philippines), Rtr PP Max from RAC Hong Kong Island East (D3450 Hong Kong,Macau & Mangolia), Rtr IPDRR Mayako from RAC Ikeda (D2660 Osaka North,Japan).

The team from RAC Semarang Simpang Lima(D3400,Indonesia) was led by President Sekar together with her team DRR Ibrahim, Rtr Bimo, PP Putri and Rtr Adien. This is the second renewal of our sister club agreement.

RACSSL then did a presentation on the fund that RAC Kota Melaka raised for the earthquake disaster in year 2006.

Well, we were invited by the Rotary Club of A Famosa to participate in their "Rotary Day 2007", simply to create awareness on Rotaract. There were a blood donation drive, colouring competition for kids, and various booths including that of Interact and Rotaract. DG Dr Wu Dar Ching was the guest of honour.

SPCA Charity Dinner

The Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka was invited by our sponsoring club, the Rotary Club of Kota Melaka to attend the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Charity Dinner as volunteers to assist in the event. President Gregory, P.E. Sujendran, Rtr Ling Soon, together with guests Shan Shan and Sujitra attended the dinner which was organised by the Melaka SPCA and Malacca Kerala Samajam at Sek. Keb. Pay Fong, Melaka.

The dinner was to raise fun for a new shelter for the Melaka SPCA where homeless animals will have a place come rain or shine.

The Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka assisted in the opening ceremony and the sales of the raffles draw. We were pleasantly suprised that we managed to sell a total of RM 2080 worth of tickets. This is solely due to the large crowd of generous and well-to-do people.

President Gregory won one of the raffles draw. However, he did not get the prize that he badly wanted which was a bicycle. Instead he won a shaver – as if he is gonna get a beard (like he needs it!)!

Every year, many people get into accidents, many people got sick and the blood kept in the blood bank never seemed to be sufficient. So every year, the Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka organises a blood donation drive to help our blood bank replenish their collection. Similar to last year, the blood donation drive is held in conjunction with World Rotaract Week.

On 17th March 2007, headed by our organising chairperson Rotaractor Susan, we gathered at the top floor of Mahkota Parade at about 10am. Our blood donation campaign was conducted at a vacant space next to the cinema. The management of Mahkota Parade was kind enough to let us use the place free of charge. The blood bank personnel from the Melaka General Hospital, headed by Madam Annie, arrived soon after and we helped her and her staff to set up the chairs and tables. We started registering donours at 11am. Our duty wais to convince potential donours and register them. After that, the rest will be taken care of by the hospital staff.

Registration was handled by two members of our club, while the rest of us armed with flyers went around trying to convince the public to donate. It started out slow as there were not many people around in the morning. But the pace picked up come afternoon as more people patron the shopping complex. There were many donours who frequently donate blood and these people needed no convincing. They carry their blood donation book wherever they go. Persuading new donours to donate proved to be quite a task because many people are actually afraid of the big needle poking into them and draining their blood. There were also concerns that they might get some diseases from the needle. So we had to explain that all needles used are new and sterile and the old ones are thrown away and that there is no pain but it felt like a mosquito bite to new donours. All this proved to be quite a lot of work as many people are ignorant about all this.

We set out to get 35 bags of blood. At the end of the day, at 3pm, we managed to collect 47 bags of blood. It was a successful project as we collected more than we targeted. And of course, it is always rewarding to be able to help serve the community. After all the talking and everyone feeling more thirsty than tired, our fellow Rotaractor Lenny Chee had kindly donated two boxes of mineral water to quench our thirsts. We also like to acknowledge President Kua Chong Beng for contributing towards our lunch. After helping the hospital staff packed up, we all dismissed and headed back home.

16th GM: World Rotaract Week

As a part of the worldwide World Rotaract Week celebration, we invited the president of our sponsoring club - the Rotary Club of Kota Melaka, President Kua Chong Beng to speak to us in our 16th general meeting.

After congratulating us on our achievements and wishing us well in our future projects, he started on his topic for the evening. He spoke at length on his various passions and hobbies. President Kua loves collecting antique cars. A 1936 Austin 7 and a 1964 Datsun Fairlady are among his prized possessions. He also has an extensive collection of stamps and currency. We were all awed by his vast collection and now have a different view on currency. We will especially pay closer attention to our notes for those 'special edition' ones!

Another highlight is the induction of our 15th member, Rtr Ng Fue Yin. It is indeed an honour to be inducted on World Rotaract Week.

We welcomed the year of the boar four days after Chap Goh Mei. Although we were a tad late, it still did not dampen our festive mood. The dinner started off with the tossing of the 'yee sang' (thanks to Eugene), and ended about an hour plus later with the restaurant's signature coconut puding. Yummm!! And of course our Chinese New Year fellowship dinner will not be complete without a session on the karaoke!! Members and guests had the opportunity to show off their talent (or lack of it!), some were hesitant at first but later warmed up quickly. Karaoke can be addictive... and we left that night promising to have a karaoke fellowship very soon (as always after our CNY dinner!!!).

14th GM: Mad About Diving

Mad about diving; I could not put it any better. And I am certain that the madness not only got a hold on me but also on a number of us in RACKM. And if you too appreciate the beauty of the aquatic world or just love the thrill of a different adventure; scuba diving might hold the key.

On 8th February, we set off to B&J Diving Center, Melaka to meet a scuba diving instructor Mr. Daren Chua. He is a certified PADI scuba diving instructor and he is currently one of the prominent instructors at B&J Diving Center. He has been in the industry for almost 7 years and just right person to share with us an exhilarating world of scuba diving.

Basically, scuba diving can be divided into four groups; recreational, commercial, scientific, and military. Recreational is the largest group, people dive for the fun of it. Commercial divers usually work for diving contractor. They are trained carry out professional work underwater such as building underwater and coastal structures, salvaging ships and treasures and conducting engineering and scientific surveys and inspections. Scientific diving is exclusively for research activities that involve marine life, the ocean, underwater archeology etc. Military divers in the other hands perform underwater military related tasks.

And Mr. Daren shared with us the largest group that is the recreational diving. The first level in recreational diving is to be a certified Open Water Diver. After the certification, you can go further by specializing in a skill. Some specializations include altitude diving, night diving, fish identification, search and recovery, underwater photography, cavern diving, wreck diving, ice diving, and technical diving specialties. And if you are thinking of making recreational diving a career there a number of options such as dive master, instructor, instructor trainer and examiner, course director or even start your own dive center or resort.

The word SCUBA is an acronym for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus and that pretty much explained that there are a number of equipment needed in scuba diving. In the talk, Mr. Daren Chua showed and explained to us some of the equipment such as mask, snorkels, fins, scuba tank, regulators, submersible pressure gauges and buoyancy control device or better known as BCD. Each of these equipments has its own purpose to adapt our human body to the underwater environment and all that allowing us to see, breathe and swim effortlessly underwater.

He also helped us to clear a few myths that people have about scuba diving. Aquatic world is a different environment than what we accustomed to and divers must observe and exercise certain standard safety rules and producers but that doesn’t make scuba diving a dangerous activity. And with today’s modern training standards and equipments scuba diving is safe and becoming safer.

Whatever Hollywood portrayed in Jaws and Open Water is definitely an exaggeration because sharks don’t have a habit of munching on divers. In actual fact, most divers have never laid their eyes on large sharks. When they do, the shark species which they often encounter are typically timid and unwilling to approach. Most sharks are not aggressive and not to be feared. The famous Great White is rare and normally found off the South coast of Australia or along a few areas in Northern California.

Another thing is that you don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer to scuba dive. It is true that scuba diving is an active sport, the better shape you are in the easier it will be. But generally if you know how to swim, in a good health and most importantly comfortable being in the water, you are only one step away. So what are you waiting for, leave that couch and sign up for a diving class today; don’t let a lifetime of adventure slip away!

13th GM / Cancer Awareness Talk

I remember ten years back, cancer is something distant to me; it is not something that I heard of everyday. But today, it is a rising health problem in the country. We can find cancer awareness campaigns being organized almost everywhere around the globe, not only by government organizations and NGOs but even by celebrities. Despite all that, how much do we really know about cancer? Are we exposing ourselves to the danger of it everyday and what can we do about it?

And during our 13th GM we had a privilege to have Dr. George Taye to answer all our queries. Dr. George is currently a general physician from Melaka General Hospital and one of his major lines of work involves treating cancer patients. Last Thursday, he had kindly taken a time off his busy schedule to give us an insight on cancer.

In the talk, we were informed that it is necessary to know our own risk factors in getting a cancer. Some of the risk factors such as age, sex and family medical history cannot be changed but there is something we can do about those risk factors that are closely related to our lifestyle choices including smoking, alcohol intake, physical inactivity and dietary factors. Others are linked to cancer causing factors in the environment such as being a secondary smoker, chemicals and radiations around us as well as certain viruses and bacteria. For those who love satay and barbequed food, it is good to know that there is no scientific prove to relate these foods as a risk factor but then bear in mind that these food are fatty; so consume wisely.

Early detection is vital in cancer treatment, that’s why it is important to go for screening accordingly. Depending on your age and risk factors, doctor may begin screening you for certain types of cancer. For those with a family history of cancer, it is recommended to get a regular screening. But with so many choices available, please consult your doctor before undergoing any screening. One of the important things that Dr. George told us is that; get to know your own body. Once you know what is normal, then it is easier for you to identify any lumps or unusual growth on your body. So self examine your own body monthly, especially for the ladies.

Lastly, I think it’s not too late to add ‘live a healthy lifestyle’ into your resolutions list for this year. So stop smoking, watch what you are eating and exercise regularly; if that body is going to last you another 30 to 40 years you better treat it well because all the money in the world cannot buy you a replacement.

We had our traditional Christmas barbeque fellowship on New Year's day at President Gregory's home, with delicious spread like grilled lamb, mouth-watering squid in tomyam sauce, juicy corn, succulent chicken wings, hot baked sweet potato, refreshing onion salad and to top it off, delightful orange jelly. More importantly, we honourably inducted our 14th member, Rtr Teh Liang Soon who studies in MMU and has shown keen interest in our club. After the induction, it was time for a game of "Win Lose or Draw" and "Light My Fire". Then Santa came dashing in the hallway (without his reindeers though) for a session of gift exchange. It was a night filled with good food, fun fellowship and laughter (especially with jolly good Santa). Enough said, let the pictures do the talking!

11th GM: Fine Dining Etiquette

Salad fork, fish knife or dessert spoon is not something that we encounter daily, in our fusion of kopitiam, mamak stall and fast food culture. But there will be time, when we find ourselves sitting in a fancy hotel feeling overwhelmed by the sparkling cutlery in front of us. And the fact that, we were surrounded by those fine people that we have just came to know five minutes ago is not making it any easier. Honestly, in that situation the good table manners we learned at home is just not enough.

Realizing that fact, on 7th December twenty four of RACKM members and guests gathered at Renaissance Malacca Hotel to get professional guidance on dining a proper way, continental style. Our facilitator for that evening is Mr. T. Arivananthan, from the Renaissance Melaka Hotel. He started by reciting a funny story that carry out a message; please do not blindly follow others because they might be doing just the wrong thing. And that applies not only in dining but in many areas of our life. A thoughtful message before appetizer, I must say.

The evening went smoothly from appetizer through dessert with enlightenments from Mr. T. Arivananthan every now and then, plus some astonishing questions from our group. Throughout the entire course we were not only introduced to numerous of cutlery used but also how to conduct good body language and carry out pleasant conversations with our fellow diners. Dining etiquette is not only concerning which fork or spoon to use next but also about looking decent while you are eating. Sitting straight while keeping both feet on the floor might cause backache and stiff legs halfway through the main course, but given a number of gifted comedians in the midst of us, the atmosphere was exceptionally warm.

For a first timer, I have to admit that it might take a little while to get used to the whole concept of continental dining etiquette. Mainly, because it not something that we practice daily. But still, the real implication of having etiquette rules is to make us comfortable. It is some sort of standards that people abide by, which you can have confidence that you are behaving appropriately.

We left that night with a new air of poise and full stomach, of course. It was another well spent time for the record!

The Rotary Club of Kota Melaka's installation dinner was held last 2nd of October at the Renaissance Melaka Hotel. The guest of honour for the event was the District Governor, Dr Wu Dar Ching who was in Melaka to visit the Rotary Clubs in the state.

Before the dinner, DG Dr Wu took time off from his schedule to have a meeting with us Rotaractors of Kota Melaka. It was an opportunity for the members to meet the DG personally and share his thoughts and opinions as well as ours. During this meeting, he urged us to increase the club's membership and do more Rotaract projects. Noting the numbers of members in the club, he challenged us to work on getting more members, as many as 100 if possible. The DG also encouraged us to do projects that would develop the members and to have more projects with the Rotary family of Rotarians and Interactors. After the half hour meeting, the DG took leave to attend the Rotary Club of Kota Melaka Club Assembly.

The dinner started at 7.30pm. It was a meal of fine Western dining, with more cutlery on the table alone than my entire kitchen! Seven Rotaractors attended the dinner, IPP Yik Chuang, PP Dharmindra, VP Sujen, Rtr Chandraa, Rtr Susan, Rtr Vera and myself, all dressed to kill in our best suits and evening gowns. The meal opened with a starters of soup and vegetable salad which was quickly followed by the main course of entertainment, a cultural fashion show put up by the Interactors of SMK Gajah Berang. The show was performed very professionally and the costumes were so beautiful, we could have easily mistaken them to be professional models. The main course of food, then followed, with a choice of either a juicy steak, chicken or fish. The food was lovely, as we savored Malacca's finest in good company.

As we worked our way through the meal, Outgoing President Tirath Singh took the podium to share his speech. He thanked the Rotary Club of Kota Melaka for the wonderful year he had and acknowledge his Board of Directors for their effort and contributions. After which, he installed President Kua Chong Beng as the 22nd President of the Rotary Club of Kota Melaka.

After a short speech, President Kua revealed his Board of Directors for the Rotary Year 2006/2007. He also presented the award of Best Rotaractor to IPP Wee Yik Chuang for his outstanding contributions and leadership as a Rotarator in the past term.

Finally, the DG took the podium to share his impressions and opinions on the club, the District and the Rotary family.

The dinner ended with desserts of ice-cream and pastries, served with coffee. However, with all the food served, members of the floor took opportunity to linger and talk as fellowship continued long after...

Deepavali, or the festival of light, is celebrated by the Hindu community around the world. In celebration of this year’s Deepavali festival, Vice President Sujendran invited all club members to a traditional Deepavali dinner at his house.

So, on 23 October 2006, we gathered at Sujen’s home at 8.30pm for the feast. Sujen’s mum had spent the whole day preparing and cooking to feed us hungry bunch and the food was superb! The spread of juicy mutton, sambal prawns, sweet and sour chicken, dharcar and vegetables, a sight that salivated our mouths and an aroma that melted our hearts. We were in for a treat!

With a few invited guests and the presence of PP Yvonne and her family, the night was filled with laughter and fellowship. We caught up with old times and spoke of those to come. We made new friends and shared our merry with them. We thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship in everybody’s company!

We are especially grateful to Vice President Sujendran for opening his home to us and to his mom for the wonderful meal. Thank you for sharing Deepavali with us!

Food for Poor

On the 21st of October 2006, the Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka organised a project called “Food for Poor”. The Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka together with the Rotary Club of Kota Melaka and a few Rotarians sponsored some grocery items to 30 poor villagers of Kampung Alai. The project is about extending the Hari Raya festivity spirit to the local community who were greatly in need of help so that they could celebrate the day as well.

The project started off at Balai Raya JKK Kampung Alai at 4.30 pm. The guest of honour for the project kick-off was Sidang Hj Mohamad Hj Harun, Ketua JKK Kampung Alai. In his speech, Sidang Hj Mohamad mentioned the importance of NGOs standing up helping the much needed people in the community. He felt honoured that the Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka and the Pemuda Umno of Kampung Alai collaborated in making the project successful.

Then, President Gregory Sim together with Sidang Hj Mohamad gave out the grocery that consisted of 5 kg rice, 1 liter cooking oil, 10 eggs, a packet of biscuits, and a bottle of cordial drink to the village dwellers of Kampung Alai. Some of the villagers could not make it to the Balai Raya, therefore a team consisting of rotaractors and youths of Kampung Alai went to each of the houses and distributed the grocery items. The objective of the project was acheived - that is to bring smiles and happiness to the people of Kampung Alai during this Hari Raya festivity.

We had the pleasure of the company of Past President Rtn Jimmy Tay at our 7th general meeting, that took place at President Gregory's home. PP Rtn Jimmy spoke to us on one of his many passions - the Japanese occupation in Malaya titled, "Japanese Invasion of Malaya & the Fall of Singapore". It all started with the Japanese landings in Singora, Pattani and Kota Bharu, and how they slowly and surely made their way to Singapore. We were kept captivated with the interesting story and photos, all thanks to PP Rtn Jimmy's interest and research. Next on the agenda was the induction of our 13th member, Rtr Susan Henry (the first for President Gregory and many more to come!).

It had been a very busy period for members of the club. Personal matters aside, we have been going around the region, attending installations and Rotaract functions. It was a good opportunity to learn from other clubs and share experiences. It was also a wonderful chance to make friends and celebrate fellowship through service.

On the 28th September 2006, RACKM had our 6th GM for the year, where members shared their various Rotaract experiences from all ends of the district as well as on a memorable trip to Philippines to attend the Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference.

The first item to be presented on the night was from PP Dr Dharmindra who had attended the installation of the Rotaract Club of Likas Bay, Sabah. PP Dharmindra and Secretary Pearly, took the opportunity of the short holiday to the Land Below The Wind to catch up with the Rotaractors there and witness the installation of their new Board of Directors.

After sharing on his trip to Sabah, PP Dharmindra also shared his experiences attending a project conducted by the Rotaract Club of North West, Singapore, Project I-Care. Project I-Care is a successful series of projects conducted by RAC North West for the pass three years in efforts to prevent avoidable blindness. PP Dharmindra took it to himself to experience the project and to understand the work required to successfully carry out this project. This time, the project was held at an old folks home, where the residence had their eyesight screened. It was a heart warming project and as PP Dharmindra shared his photos taken, the stories of the so experience, the residences and the fellow Rotaractors and helpers, moved many of us with their warmth and compassion.

Next, IPP Yik Chuang, Treasurer Lenny and Club Service Director Eugene shared their experience at the Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference (APRRC) in Makati City, Philippines. The 4-day conference was truly amazing with Rotaractors coming from far and wide - as far as Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore and of course, Malaysia. District 3310 sent one of the biggest contingents to the APRRC, complete with their own uniformed contingent T-shirts. IPP Yik Chuang, who narrated their experiences introduced many of us to other Rotaractors from around the region and also about Philippines, a country not too far away yet so different in terms of culture, social lifestyle and traditions. They tried some of the Filipino delicacies, photos of most for which left many of us with rumbling stomachs. They were also treated with cultural shows put up by the local Rotaractors and various Rotaract forums by various Rotaract leaders around the globe.

But the event that was most memorable to them was the cultural show and booths put up by the various contingents. Here, they shared with other Rotaractors what Malaysia and Singapore were about, with photos and mementos decorating their booth and a cultural performance of local dances and songs. Awards were also given out on the night for Best Cultural Performance, which eventually went to a contingent from Japan, and Best Dancers, which was won by a representative from our own District 3310.

The GM was somewhat short and sweet as we learnt more about different Rotaract clubs from around the region. Rotaract, despite most clubs having the same structures and fundamentals, is truly international with various blends of cultures and traditions. With every club being uniquely different, there is much that we can learn from others and much that we can share for the betterment of ourselves and for the people around us.

District tour to Melaka, 8th-9th Sept 06 (5th GM)

The Rotaract District 3310 Team, led by District Rotaract Representative PP Mohamed Zakir and District Rotaract Chairman, PP John Ng, paid the Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka a visit as part of their Zone 1 leg of the District Tour. It was an honour to host their visit, to discuss various upcoming Rotaract issues, as well an opportunity to meet up with old friends. Also, it was an excuse to bring them around Melaka town and eat to our hearts content.

The team that came to Melaka comprised, apart from the DRC and the DRR, IPDRR Audrey Cheong, District Treasurer Winnie, District Professional Development Director Kah Hian, Assistant District Community Service Director Amanda and Assistant Club Service Director Kumar. They arrived on Friday night in the DRC’s Toyota and went straight for the famous Melaka fried oyster in Jalan Bunga Raya. Greeting them on arrival was IPP Yik Chuang, Club Service Director Eugene, Community Service Director Calvin, DRRE PP Dharmindra and I.

After the grub, we checked them into the Garden City Apartments for the night and proceeded with discussion sessions about Rotaract. The DRC, the DRR as well as the IPDRR, took full opportunity to meet up with DRRE Dharmindra to discuss plans for the year as well as the coming one. District issues were ironed out as three generations of District Rotaract leaders; the past, the present and the future, had their power talks with their Rotary advisor.

We had an early start to the next morning, with the District team enthusiastically up and ready by 8.00 in the morning. It was an important date, especially for IPDRR Audrey, who was determined to try the elusive Limbongan half-boiled eggs and kaya toast. Dubbed the most perfect half-boil eggs by visiting Rotarators in the past, IPDRR had failed to try it in her previous three visits. Thankfully, the shop was open today!

After breakfast, the District team decided to check out the Happiness Home, a voluntary home for children with cerebral palsy. The home, of 35 children, provides food, shelter, care and love. The unfortuned effects of celebral palsy meant most of the children suffer various physical challenges and illnesses that meant 24-hour care. The children had to be constantly monitored for illnesses and complications that could be sudden and fatal. Yet, the children at Happiness Home, despite their misfortunes, seemed happy and friendly. Seeing the dedicated staff and the warmth of the children, openned our eyes and melt our hearts away. We bade farewell to the home with a small parting gift of Kentucky Fried Chicken, a favourite among the children, and resolute hearts.

We proceeded back to the apartments for the District meeting. Pulling on his cap as District Community Service Director, IPP Yik Chuang took part in the meeting while the rest of sat in to learn more about the upcoming District plans. Then, we took a break for lunch. Lunch was at Bayonya Restaurant, a favourite among the club members for a lovely Peranakan cuisine. We were joined for lunch by Vice President Sujen and our guest Jeya. As we mauled into the rich, traditional nyonya food, laughter and fellowship filled the air.

Eugene brings new meaning to the phrase “Dig in”

Dessert was durian cendol, one of the many must-have for visits to Melaka. As we sat back and savoured the sweet, ice-cool desert, I gave a short presentation about the Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka, our club background, accomplished activities and upcoming plans. The club members and the district team further exchanged ideas and shared grand plans for the future.

After desserts, the group broke to two as some of the members of the District team went to Jonker walk for some shopping while others decided to adjourn to my house for a quick game of Risk. Quick proved an understatement, was I was embarassingly torned apart in the game by the keen forces led by generals Kumar, Amanda and Winnie. Alas, I shall get my revenge!

By 6pm, the rest of the team had gathered in my house. A short break to freshen up and recharge, before they set off to Batu Pahat for the Rotaract Club of Batu Pahat Installation. This visit, despite a short one, proved fruitful and educational. It rekindled friendship and fellowship and aligns with the district theme of “Leading the way towards a unified District”.

We look forward to hosting the District team again, soon!

Asia-Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference - Pilipinas 2006

Tagaytay City, Philippines was the venue for the 3rd Asia-Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference (APRRC). IPP Wee Yik Chuang, Rtr. Eugene Tan and I, representing the Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka were part of a strong contingent from District 3310 to Pilipinas 2006 from the 31st of August to 3rd of September 2006. Other delegates in our party included members of Rotaract Club of Northwest, Rotaract Club of Marina City, Rotaract Club of Raffles City, Rotaract Club of NUS, Rotaract Club of Kota Kinabalu and Rotaract Club of Likas Bay.

Tagaytay, 70km south of Manila, perches on a 600 metre high ridge overlooking Taal Volcano, is a popular weekend retreat because of its cool climate. Upon arrival at Clarke International airport, we were being transported by bus to Tagaytay International Trade Center where the conference was being held as well as where most participants including ourselves were accommodated.

The first day of conference was basically free and easy whereby we were required to register our attendance and attend a welcoming dinner for all delegates. At the dinner, we were able to mingle with the other 500 plus participants, some coming as far Canada and Australia while majority of them are from our neighbouring countries Taiwan, Japan and the host country Philippines. Exchange of name cards and bannerettes started at a furious pace while we were treated to some local delicacies as well as local traditional dances.

For the next two days of conference, we attended various forums on topics relating to the development of Rotaract movement within the Asia Pacific region as well as notable community projects being carried out by Rotaract clubs to better the lives of less fortunate people.

The highlight of the 4 days conference was the Cultural Night whereby all the delegates appeared in their traditional costumes. In addition, each District was given a 5 minutes window to do a cultural performance. District 3310, led by Rtr. Michael Choy, did a medley of traditional folks songs comprising of Rasa Sayang, Burung Kakak Tua and Chan Mali Chan. We did not win anything on the night but certainly enjoyed performances from other Districts especially the Taiwanese who did a kungfu style dance.

On the last day of the conference, each District was given a booth to showcase their country. On our part, we decided to distribute Malacca tourism brochures obtained from the Malacca Tourism Board as well as a free sample of durian and coconut dodols. Within an hour of the setting up the booth, all the dodols and brochures were snapped up like hot cakes.

The conference ended with a farewell dinner on the last night whereby all participants let their hair down and danced the night away. The APRRC bell was then passed on to the next host Malaysia which will be organized by District 3300.

For those that miss all the fun and excitement of this year’s APRRC, do save up now for the 4th APRRC next year in Malaysia scheduled for 24th to 28th August 2007.

A walk through Renaissance

What a privileged lot we are as we had the opportunity to conduct our 4th GM at the Renaissance Melaka Hotel, with a rather exciting agenda. Thanks to IPP Wee Yik Chuang, we were lucky to get the insiders’ view of Malacca’s most prestigious hotel. A total of 12 members and guests took a peek at the behind-the-scenes of the running of a five-star hotel; a walk through Renaissance Melaka Hotel.

Our visit started at 2.00pm in the hotel lounge, where we were introduced to our gracious hosts, Miss Julianna and Encik Jamal. After a quick drink, we proceeded to the 24th floor, the highest floor of the hotel, to the Club Level. At the Club Lounge, exclusive guests can rest and relax while enjoying a bird’s eye view of the tranquil Malacca town while being pampered with free flow of drinks and goodies. The 24th floor also housed the Deluxe Suite and the Presidential Suite, patronized by visiting Royalty and dignitaries as well as Hollywood stars, like Sean Connery who stayed there once during the filming of the movie “The Entrapment” in Malacca. During the time of our visit, the room was being primed for the stay of former Minister of Transportation, Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik.

We took advantage of the visit to peek into the Presidential Suite, which cost a staggering RM900+++ a night. Indeed the room was grand with a living area, private dining room and king size bed but the part that impressed us most, was the bathroom, complete with the newly installed Turkish bath and a Jacuzzi.

While visiting the Deluxe Suite, the hotel also gave us a demonstration on how the beds are made. There are actually many layers in making the bed, starting with a bed and a topper. This layer of the bed is covered with, not one but two layers of bed sheets. As the Housekeeping Supervisor masterly demonstrated how to fold the perfect corners, we realize how making a bed is truly an art form that requires patience and skill. He then proceeded to placing the duvet in its casing. With a few swift hands movement, he expertly slipped the duvet into the casing, neat and trim. He arranged it carefully on the bed, folding and tucking in the edges to ensure that the bed is taut and topped it with a bed liner.

Moving on, we visited the many types of rooms in the hotel. This included the Junior Suite, with a smaller living area but still ever so impressive; the Deluxe Room, situated on the corners of every floor with king sized beds and finally the Superior Room, which overlooked the Straits of Melaka.

After visiting the various rooms and suites, we proceeded to everybody’s favourite, the kitchen. We were brought around for a quick tour around the kitchen by the chef in charge, Chef Tim. The kitchen, which prepared the food for the hotel’s famous Summerfield Restaurant and the room services, was divided to 4 parts, cold preparations, local Malay food, the Asian food and western food.

Moving on we ventured into the basement area, the ‘actual’ behind-the-scene of the hotel. It was particularly interesting to see the pastry kitchen, where cakes are baked and decorated, and the laundry, with their huge 60kg washing machines and giant ironing rollers that made sure all linen are warm and crisp. We also took time to visit Selera Ria - the staff cafeteria, the housekeeping department that managed all the uniforms, and the engineering room, which maintains all the hotel’s facilities.

Lastly, we dropped by the Business Centre and the back office. The Business Centre is an area of conference rooms and computers, available to guests who might require them for quick meeting during their stay in the hotel. The back office, located, literally, at the back of the Reception and Cashier, is where the hotel guest management activities take place. Here is where they track all their guests and ensure to all their needs and expectations. It also housed the telephone operators and the controls to the hotels centralized sound systems.

The walk through the Renaissance Melaka Hotel was truly amazing. It was also an eye-opener to what a hotel is. Not only did we manage to see the posh suites and heavenly bathrooms, we learnt that running a hotel requires a lot of patience and courtesy. Quality is a virtue at the hotel, with various quality systems in place and emphasis going to the training of their staff. Being service orientated, the staff in the hotel seemed ever courteous and willing to go the extra mile to meet their every customer’s expectations. The hotel also organized team building activities, social functions and community service projects for their staff, ensuring a close knit among the staff.

3rd GM & Guests' Day

The hightlight of our 3rd general meeting was Guests' Day, aptly so in conjunction with August being a membership and extension month. We had the pleasure of the company of six guests - two returning guests Stephenie and Adelene, while four first-time guests Arunah, Fue Yin, Phei Phei and Susan.

After a session on 'What is Rotaract?', we then proceeded to our much-awaited agenda - a game of 'the pyramid game-cum-taboo', prepared by gamemaster Pres Gregory. With diversified topics like arsenal, pretty, academy awards, high & mighty, megabytes, quick bites, not far away and letters, everybody was in for a great time. It was a very close match. As a forfeit, the not-so-fortunate team had to sing the birthday song (for our July and August babies), led earnestly by Rtr Eugene!

It was a session full of laughter and fun, and we continued on with fellowhip later at a nearby 'mamak' eatery.

Recognition from RI for the 2006 World Rotaract Week celebration

After months of waiting in anticipation for the little brown envelope, it finally arrived last Thursday, much to the delight of IPP Wee. He excitedly informed us through sms that the pin and letter have at last arrived!

The World Rotaract Week is an annual worldwide celebration to honour the chartering of the first club in North Carolina, USA on the 13th March 1968. The recent World Rotaract Week celebration was celebrated on the 11th-17th March 2006. We carried out four projects that week, including a community service project - a Blood Donation Drive. Rotary International acknowledged our involvement by awarding the World Rotaract Week recognition pin and letter of appreciation.

This is the second consecutive year that RACKM participated in the World Rotaract Week celebration. Kudos to the organising chairperson Rtr Sujen and all members for the hard work and sweat.

What Is Rotaract

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are usually community-based or university-based and are sponsored by a local Rotary club making them true "partners in service" and key members of the Rotary family.

Through the Rotaract program, young adults not only augment their knowledge and skills, but they also address the physical and social needs of their communities while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service.

All Rotaract efforts begin at the local grassroots level and Rotaract clubs have access to many of the resources of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation.

As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 7,600 Rotaract clubs in some 158 countries, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

This joint effort by RAC Republic Polytechnic and RAC Singapore West was indeed a success, with a total of 137 participants from Singapore, Sarawak, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Canada and India. President Gregory, IPP Yik Chuang, Rtr Sujen, Rtr Eugene, Rtr Pearly and DRRE Dr Dharmindra travelled all the way from Melaka just to attend the assembly. And we sure have no regrets - shared loads of ideas and gained new experiences.

13th July 2006 - The first General Meeting for the year was held at the Malacca Club at 8.00pm. It was the GM to mark the start of the new Rotaract term and the kick off of the club’s newly adopted theme of “Rotaract: Empowering Through Knowledge”.

The main agenda for this first GM of the year was a talk on Expired Air Resuscitation (EAR) by Mr. Yong Yang Chow, a qualified lifeguard trainer and examiner. Mr. Yong had been training lifeguards for many years and was very generous to share his knowledge and experiences with us.

The talk was indeed informative, as Mr. Yong covered a large extend of EAR. This included the ABCs of EAR, the many techniques of conducting EAR and certain DOs and DON’Ts when conducting it. He mentioned briefly on other life saving maneuvers and invited us for a demonstration. Mr. Yong shared also his experience in training and conducting life saving courses and stressed that proper knowledge and technique is very important in an emergency. Wrong techniques and failure to recognize the symptoms correctly often end up causing more danger to the victim. He said many people take lifesaving techniques lightly, mainly because there are exposed to them a lot on television. However, he warned that the techniques often displayed on television were often inaccurate. Such he was very glad to share his knowledge with us as we can never be too prepared to face an emergency.

The "Cup of Life": RACKM's 16th Installation Dinner

The Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka's 16th Installation kicked off on the 1st July 2006, 7.30 pm at the Renaissance Hotel, Melaka with the theme the "Cup of Life". The theme was selected to honour the game that brings the world together - football. The guest of Honour that night was the District Rotaract Chairman, PP Rtn John Ng from Rotary Club of Changi.

The night was attended by Assistant Governor Seet Jen Ping, President of the Rotary Club of Kota Melaka, PP Dalon Quah representing District 3310 District Rotaract Representative, President and members of Rotaract Club of North West, Immediate Past President of Rotaract Club of Republic Polytechnic, members of Rotaract Club of Raffles City, President and members of Rotaract Club of JB and Rotaract Club of Marina City.

The referees or the masters of ceremony were Rtr PP Dharmindra Rajah and Ms Juliet Leong. Right after the whistle was blown, the night started off with the speech by the Organizing Chairman, Rtr Sujendran. The night then proceeded with PP Rtr Dalon Quah presenting the DRR's message followed by message from The Rotary Club of Kota Melaka presented by Rotary Club President, Rotarian Kua Chong Beng.

The limelight of the night was when the guest of honour presented his message to the Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka. He congratulated the past board of directors for their achievement throughout the year and wished the new board all the best in taking up the challenges. The Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka's 16th Installation was officiated by the guest of honor. Rotarian John Ng was escorted to the stage and scored a goal.

It was a buffet dinner serve with various Malacca cuisine and we also had the famous Singapore fried bihun.

To spice up the night, we had a performance from Bali, Indonesia. It was a traditional Balinese dance performed by Ms Lily, a student of MMU, Malacca. Her performance just captivated the audience. The performance was arranged to celebrate the Twin Club agreement with the Rotaract Club of Semarang Simpang Lima, Indonesia.

The night then proceeded with the speech by the outgoing President, Rtr Wee Yik Chuang followed by recognition of the Board of Directors of 2005/2006.

Then it was the Installation of President Gregory Sim and the board of Directors for 2006/2006. They are:

The "Cup of Life" is not complete with a game of football or what we call "The Third Leg". Each player had to tie themselves with a bottle of mineral water that acts as their third leg. The players had to dribble the golf balls with their "Third Leg". The winner of the game was the husband and wife team of Benny and Grace both Ex-Rotaractors of Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka.

Besides the Installation night for Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka, it was also one of our member's birthday, Rtr Lenny Chee. Even though he declined to say his age, we are pretty sure it is somewhere between 20 to 30.

To make sure our guests will not go back empty handed, the next event was the lucky draw. 18 lucky draw items were given out the guest of the night. Among the items were Lighters, CD cases and hamper. Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka also had a Raffles Draw. The sales of the Raffles draw will be channelled to the club's Community Fund. It will be used to fund future community projects. Among the Raffles draw items were a DVD player, Mini Cooler, Mini Radios and 2 bottles of wine.

After the Raffles Draw, the referees blew the 90th minute final whistle and the fellowship continues over at Utan Pub for England Vs Portugal Match.
